Ended up at SEH today (New Year’s Day) with a suspected retina detachment. The staff were all wonderful and so kind and helpful. It was not terribly busy and I was in and out in a short time, even though they were very thorough with the testing. I really appreciate them being available on a public holiday and treating me so well. (Submitted under a pseudonym)

Had to attend for emergency eye surgery. Staff curtious, friendly and professional. Would rather not have had to attend and use their services but glad they were there when I need them.

The most amazing eye hospital ❤️ Thank you for looking after my Dad. My dad’s eye surgery went well and I am so forever grateful for that. Thank you once again 🙏🌸💐🌹🌺🌷🌻 You have been amazing! Everyone was so nice and was so professional! My dad has hearing problems but they did not raise their voices and was super gentle to him which I appreciated. Sutherland hospital staffs screamed in his ears abruptly which was very unprofessional. I also got an embedded eye lash (foreign object) removed from my eyes, I couldn’t see for weeks due to my eyes being infected but they fixed it, thank you once again.

Best Eye Hospital experience. Presented with a foreign object in my eye, in extreme pain, I was registered in in less than 20 min and Rachel the nurse meticulously opened my eyelid and twisted the superior one outwards and got the object, clearing with little saline solution. Opto exam followed. The ophthalmology resident also assessed the condition of my eye with proper care and appropriate equipment. I am currently a tourist here and it all only cost 350$A. In the US or even my home country the consult alone would have been more. All paperwork was provided post intervention. Couldn’t be more happy.

I cannot fault the service & care provided by both nurses & doctors during my three attended in 2025-26 so far. Staff also work in the attached Gadigal Clinic & their combined performances make for an excellent team. Sure, waiting times seem long but fair warning is given when seeking admittance to this fantastic, Medicare funded facility that treats many Australians in need of their care. Most visits require a patient to see multiple administrative & diagnostic staff.

It's historically called Rum Hospital and is a major hospital in Sydney and oldest in Australia, built in 1811. At present it has about 100 beds and about 400 staff. Specialises in eye and hand surgery. It's a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. The buildings are of old colonial Georgian design. It features several arched openings and a lovely large fountain in the courtyard. Toilets are available and cafes about. Parking is difficult, hence public transport is advisable.

In life, we often take things for granted, including our eye sight. We never tend to think about our eyesight until we lose it! In Australia we are truly blessed to have Sydney Eye Hospital! most people do not even know it exists! we take it for granted that such a wonderful team of people are working together to help us. In my instance, my eyesight was deteriorating with a Macular hole, in my left eye, it was progressing, not healing. Dr Dong An, advised me I would need an eye operation if it did not start to heal in a month, it didn't and so an operation was scheduled. Upon reading what the operation entailed this became the scariest event of my life, more so than jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet, or being shot at by crazies, this operation was the scariest thing I have ever encountered, given it was to be done while conscious! Dr Dong An assured me it would be OK and not to worry. I asked about how much of the contents of my eye, the vitreous gel, would be removed, he said "all of it" all the contents of my eye, the vitreous gel, to be removed while I was conscious! and then have the empty eyeball filled with gas! even more scary! Dr Dong An reassured me it would be OK and not to worry! In Australian lingo, I was SHIT SCARED! On the day of the operation, I asked the admitting nurse how many of these operations had young Dr Dong An done. The nurse said "on surgery days, he does about 15 a day!" wow! that was reassuring! I wish someone had told me that earlier! But Dr Dong An is not a braggart, he does not blow his own trumpet and say how great a surgeon he is. Dr Dong An is a humble, well trained, skilled professional, as are all the wonderful staff at Sydney Eye Hospital! we must not take them for granted! Separate to the skill sets of the staff is the wonderful technology! those Optical Chromo Tomography OCT machines defy belief, seeing defects in a human eye to resolution better than 10% of thickness of plastic glad wrap, WOW! and not one machine,

I recently visited Sydney Eye Hospital and honestly had a great experience from start to finish. The doctors, nurses, and staff were all professional, caring, and made me feel comfortable throughout the process. Considering it was a Sunday, I was actually surprised at how reasonable the wait time was. Everything moved along much better than expected, and the staff still took the time to properly explain things and answer questions without making me feel rushed. You can tell the people there genuinely care about patients. Very thankful for the treatment and overall experience. Highly recommended.

Macquarie wanted a permanent hospital for Sydney after Britain declined to fund one. In 1810 three contractors accepted spirits-import privileges, convict labour and public supplies in return for construction. From 1868, Lucy Osburn’s Nightingale-trained system gave nurses wider responsibility for ward discipline, cleanliness, ventilation and patient care. Cooks and servants remained under a separate lay superintendent, dividing responsibility from authority. During the same period, doctors increasingly condemned the hospital’s physical conditions; by 1875, pyaemia, a severe bloodstream infection producing abscesses, and erysipelas, an acute bacterial skin infection, made even minor operations unsafe. The 1878 competition consequently sought a “modern pavilion hospital”. Thomas Rowe’s winning scheme was reduced, then modified to meet medical requirements. Sydney’s experience showed that organised healthcare depended on resources to provide it, buildings shaped around safe treatment, and authority aligned with responsibility for care.
